AAALAC Accreditation

AAALAC

AAALAC International is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs. AAALAC stands for the “Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care”.

Every 3 years UTHealth undergoes a self-study and an external peer-review of the institutional animal care and use program to assure the administration, our funding agencies and the public that the institution is maintaining high standards that are consistent with federal laws, guidelines and policies relating to the use of experimental animals in biomedical research.

The UTHealth Animal Care and Use Program has been fully accredited by this organization since 1978 and is very proud of that distinction. In October 2023 AAALAC-I performed a comprehensive review of our standard operating procedures and found the program to be exemplary.  The next accreditation review and site visit by a team of animal research professionals will be scheduled in 2026.
