I. POLICY AND GENERAL STATEMENT

Regular employees of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston are eligible for leave to attend the funeral of a family member. A regular employee is appointed for a period of four and one-half consecutive months with a definite job assignment that must be 50 percent time or more.

A leave with pay shall be granted to compensate for the loss of regular pay. An employee's family is defined as a spouse, as well as the following relatives of either the employee or the spouse: parents, step-parents, children, brothers, sisters, grandparents or grandchildren. Funeral leave shall be granted only for scheduled work days.

II. PROCEDURE

Funeral leave shall be granted for a period not to exceed three working days, provided that such leave does not extend more than two days beyond the date of the funeral. If additional time is required, it may, with the approval of the employee's immediate supervisor, be charged to vacation or to leave without pay. Hours used for funeral leave are not required to be consecutive.

Leave without pay or other paid leave may be granted to attend a funeral that does not qualify for funeral leave.
