All UTHealth Houston and UTPhysicians employees receive Safety Orientation Training upon employment during the New Employee Orientation session provided by Human Resources. During this session, basic information is provided about general safety, fire safety, emergency procedures, emergency communication, and information is provided about additional safety training offered by SHERM.
Subsequently, all UTHealth Houston employees will also receive refresher training on basic safety information within the Health and Safety Module provided during the Annual Employee Compliance Training.
In addition, the link above is a video that provides a comprehensive look at the potential hazards that we have on our campus, where to find important safety information, and what to do in case of a fire. If it's been a while since you've been in orientation, we encourage you to take a 10 minute micro-break and look at our video.

Initial Laboratory & Bloodborne Pathogens Safety Training
Federal and State Laws (e.g. Texas Hazard Communication Standard TH&S Code 502.009; OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030) require that all employees who work with hazardous chemicals or potentially infectious biological complete training regarding the hazards they may encounter in the workplace. Please complete this training prior to initiating work in the laboratory setting. In addition to providing useful information regarding protection from exposure to hazardous chemical substances and biological agents, the training offers very useful information regarding how to obtain safety data sheets (SDSs), how to properly collect and dispose of hazardous waste, and what to do in the event of an emergency.
Annual Lab and Bloodborne Pathogens Refresher Training
This training provides a brief refresher on the critical elements of laboratory safety and also fulfill the annual bloodborne pathogens training requirement. Principal investigators and laboratory personnel working in or overseeing a laboratory are required to complete this training at least annually. Principal Investigators will be responsible for verifying that all laboratory personnel have completed the training as required by the UTHealth Houston Chemical Safety Committee. Environmental Health and Safety will verify the training has been completed during each lab’s annual laboratory safety survey. This course can be completed online at EHS learning management system.
