National Immunization Awareness Month for Older Adults

National immunization awareness month - image of gloved hands holding a vial of vaccine
September is National Immunization Awareness Month, a time to recognize the vital role that vaccines play in protecting older adults. As we age, our immune systems naturally weaken, making us more vulnerable to illnesses such as flu, pneumonia, shingles, and COVID-19. Staying up to date on recommended immunizations is one of the best ways to maintain independence, avoid hospitalizations, and enjoy a healthier life.
Rafael Samper-Ternent, MD, PhD, Director of the Clinical Research and Innovation Core, Institute on Aging, Associate Professor, Management, Policy, and Community Health, UTHealth Houston School of Public Health recently emphasized the importance of vaccines for older adults during a Fox 26 News segment.
To help older adults and caregivers know which vaccines are most important, the Health in Aging Foundation offers a clear, easy-to-use guide: Essential Vaccines for Older Adults (PDF).
Vaccines not only help prevent serious illness but also support healthy aging. Talk with your health care provider this fall to make sure you are protected and ready for the months ahead.
