Wargo, MD, receives TAMEST O’Donnell Award for pioneering microbiome research

Jennifer Wargo, MD, Graduate School faculty member and professor of Surgical Oncology and Genomic Medicine at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, has received a 2023 Edith and Peter O’Donnell Award in Medicine from the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology (TAMEST) for her contributions to the understanding of how the gut microbiome influences responses to immunotherapy and other cancer treatments. She is affiliated with the Program in Immunology.

Tumors May Shed Protein to Create Barriers that Block Immune Cells

Scientists have identified a protein that may help prevent immune cells from entering breast tumors and killing the cancer cells. The research, which was conducted primarily in mice, could lead to potential strategies for overcoming barriers that keep certain immune cells from attacking tumors, according to the investigators.

Houston doctors studying 9 'COVID tongue' patients discover a genetic clue

The Young Laboratory at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry is working with oral surgeon James Melville, DDS, to study the relationship between COVID-19 and macroglossia among patients who underwent intubation. Simon Young, DDS, MD, PhD, assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, and Melville spoke with the Houston Chronicle in May 2021 about ongoing research on nine COVID-positive cases. The two are working alongside resident Victoria Mañón, DDS, who is serving as research coordinator. The study is entitled, “Genomic and Histological Analysis of COVID -19 Massive Macroglossia.”
