Health Group Joins Battle Over NIH Funding

Twenty of the nation’s leading scientific research institutions and industries, and health and patient advocates, have formed a new coalition, United for Medical Research, to call upon the United States to make a new commitment to funding the NIH. Advertisements warn against layoffs and delays in medical advancements. Significant cuts could also compromise the country's medical innovation for years to come. According to a UMR report released earlier this year, sequestration would eliminate 33,000 jobs across the United States, leading to a corresponding $4.5 billion decrease in economic activity. The group has already begun to lobby Congress to reconsider the 8.2% cut.
