United to Serve

United to Serve is a UT System wide volunteer initiative, initiated in 2004 by the University of Texas System Student Advisory Council (UTSSAC), involving UT System students, administrators, faculty and staff in an effort to engage and mobilize thousands of volunteers in the fifteen-plus communities where we are located. Held in conjunction with National Volunteer Week, United to Serve enables each UT System institution to plan, partner with a non-profit organization, and initiate a volunteer initiative based on their preference and the needs of their community. The key is to organize projects that will allow students, administrators, faculty and staff to serve their community, together, in the greatest way possible.
UNITED TO SERVE 2013
UTHEALTH "UNITED TO END HUNGER"
The tradition continues this year with our eighth annual UTHealth United to Serve volunteer project! The students, faculty, and staff at UTHealth will partner with the Houston Food Bank (HFB) for our 2013 United to Serve project. The Houston Food Bank was founded in 1982, and has, for more than 25 years, fed the hungry by distributing 70 million pounds of food each year to nearly 500 hunger relief agencies in 18 counties in southeast Texas. In addition to distributing food and other needed supplies, the HFB provides nutrition education and job training. And, the HFB feeds children who might not otherwise get a nourishing hot meal during the day.
This year we want to do more to ensure more people get fed through our efforts. We will have a volunteer morning shift from 8am - 12pm. Refreshments will be served during check-in from 7:00am – 8:00am, and volunteers who register by February 22nd will walk away with a free t-shirt. Together we can make an impact on our community that extends beyond the medical center. All volunteers are required to register in advance. Registration will close on Friday, March 1, 2013. Registration link is provided below.
Take the Challenge! Each UTHealth School will compete for this year’s Student InterCouncil (SIC) 2012 Volunteer Service Award. This year’s winner will be determined by the percentage of volunteers registered! The SIC will announce the winner of the Volunteer Service Award at their 2013 Salutation event.
