HI 6314 Knowledge Acquisition

This course will focus on an understanding of the different forms of knowledge used in Biomedical Informatics. Based on the type of knowledge, here the knowledge is located and how the knowledge is structured, we will examine different methods to acquire that knowledge from the people and/or repositories that contain the knowledge. We will examine strategies to validate that knowledge and to create a repository for that knowledge. More detailed understanding of the repository can be found in Knowledge Modeling I.

Access to the Internet, personal computer, consent of instructor.

Course Goals

By the end of the course, each student will have the opportunity to:

  • Identify and define at least three kinds of knowledge
  • Describe the impact of context on knowledge.
  • Determine the appropriate strategy for the acquisition of different forms of knowledge.
  • Apply and evaluate such a strategy.
