Carlos R. Hamilton Jr., M.D., special advisor to the President, advises President James T. Willerson on furthering the university's clinical goals as part of the university's mission. He focuses his efforts on overseeing clinical operations throughout The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston campus. Among his responsibilities, Hamilton develops policies for clinical practice and management, monitors reports on clinical productivity, and works with the deans to develop new clinical programs.

Hamilton is a physician specializing in endocrinology and internal medicine for nearly 30 years. He joined the health science center faculty in 2000 and was appointed to his current position as special advisor to the president in 2006.

Hamilton recently was appointed to the Health, Medical & Research Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) by the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy. WADA, an international agency, regulates and supervises the ban on performance-enhancing drugs in athletic competition such as Tour d’ France and the Olympic Games.

Hamilton is a past president of the Harris County Medical Society and of the Texas Society of Internal Medicine and serves on several national physician boards

In Nov. 2003, Hamilton was named Laureate of the Texas Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the chapter’s highest honor, for his outstanding contributions to the medical community.

A 1966 graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, Hamilton trained in internal medicine and endocrinology at Johns Hopkins and Massachusetts General Hospital. He has served on the clinical faculty at the UT Medical School at Houston and Baylor College of Medicine. He has supported development activities of the Boy Scouts of America, the Museum of Health and Medical Science and the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library.
