UTHealth School of Nursing hosts 25th Annual Valley Conference on Aging

HOUSTON – (August 15, 2011) – Keeping elderly safe is the focus of the 25th and final Joseph C., Sr. & Selenia E. Valley Conference on Aging, which will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 at The Hilton University of Houston Hotel & Conference Center, 4800 Calhoun.

The conference, sponsored by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Nursing Center on Aging, will include a keynote address by May L. Wykle, Ph.D., R.N., director of the University Center on Aging and Health at Case Western Reserve University. She will discuss the future of caregiving for elders, and also will be presented with the Outstanding and Enduring Gerontological Professional award for her work over the last 25 years.

Presenters will focus on patient safety as well as specific patient problems such as prediction and prevention of pressure ulcers and the prevention of delirium. The conference is aimed at professional caregivers including nurses, hospital and nursing home administrators, social workers, home health workers, ombudsman volunteers and home caregivers.

“This is the final conference funded by the Valley Trust Fund, and our goal is to focus on safety and caregiving since the original purpose of the Trust was to improve safety and caregiving of the elderly,” said Nancy Bergstrom Ph.D., the Theodore J. & Mary E. Trumble Professor in Aging Research and director of the UTHealth Center on Aging at the UTHealth School of Nursing.

Over the past 25 years, the UTHealth School of Nursing has hosted the conference with a mission to educate hospital and nursing administrators, nurses, social workers, community participants and others working with the aging population.

The registration fee is $75 for healthcare professionals and $50 for students and members of the community. There is a $25 fee for those wishing to attend the luncheon only.
