UTHealth employees pledged more than $215,000 in the 2009 campaign.
In this 16th year, the United Way-administered campaign raised a total of $10 million for charitable organizations in the Lone Star State and beyond.
The selected charities, all identified by the IRS as 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, are scrutinized to meet stringent legal requirements including spending no more than 25 percent of their funds raised on administration and fund raising.

Adding to UTHealth’s achievement of most Houston dollars raised, the Houston-based academic health center’s pledges made up more than 25 percent of the area’s total contributions, and in The University of Texas System, UTHealth’s employee participation rate was 5 percent higher than the system average.
Dr. Larry R. Kaiser, president of the UTHealth, said he is proud of his “team’s” overwhelming participation, especially during such a challenging economic time, noting that coming together for the welfare of others is a hallmark of the UTHealth culture.
“The generosity we saw this year at UTHealth really demonstrates what sets our team apart, individuals from all parts of our campus working together for the common purpose of helping those in need,” he said.
“With these contributions the community sees not only our on-the-job dedication but our personal commitment to transforming lives,” he said.
