Innovation expert to address PARTNERS Spring Luncheon, March 12

HOUSTON - (Jan. 19, 2010) - Jason Hwang, M.D., M.B.A., co-author of The Innovator's Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Health Care, will be the keynote speaker for the PARTNERS 2010 Spring Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. March 12 at the Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa, 111 North Post Oak Lane. Proceeds from the event benefit programs and services for The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Nursing.
Hwang - along with co-authors Clayton M. Christensen and the late Jerome H. Grossman, M.D. - apply the principles of "disruptive innovation" to America's broken health care system, offering an insightful analysis of the problems of cost and access related to the medical system in the U.S. and outlining a framework for improvement. The Innovator's Prescription explains how consumer empowerment can and should transform the health care industry.
Houston philanthropists Jane and Robert Cizik, the event's honorary chairs, will be honored during the luncheon for their service to the UT School of Nursing. (Christensen is currently the Robert and Jane Cizik Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School.)
Hwang is an internal medicine physician, senior strategist for the healthcare practice at Innosight LLC, and co-founder and executive director of healthcare at Innosight Institute, a nonprofit social innovation think tank in San Francisco, Calif. He received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Michigan and his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
PARTNERS stands for "Promoting Advancement Resources to Nursing Education, Research and Students." The organization was formed in 1994 to lend support and encouragement for students and faculty of the UT School of Nursing through scholarships, endowments, faculty research grants and student services. The luncheon is PARTNERS' largest fund-raising activity. To date, the organization holds a $1 million endowment to support its projects.
PARTNERS has provided 86 full-tuition nursing scholarships, 35 faculty research grants and four PARTNERS endowed professorships. PARTNERS supplies the traditional UT School of Nursing pins each year for the Bachelor of Science Pinning Ceremony at commencement. Other major contributions have included a student lounge in the school and support to the Center for Nursing Research Biological Sciences Laboratory and the Pre-Clinical Critical Care Laboratory.
