Community Service
The university offers patient care in clinics, mobile units and within schools across Houston and surrounding areas as well as communities along the Texas-Mexico border. Health education is provided to children and adults in the Houston area and continuing education is provided across the state to health professionals.
Quick Facts FY07
- The Dental Branch provided over $1.3 million in charity dental care.
- The Harris County Psychiatric Center providing mental health information to more than 50,000 people.
- The Medical School provided $100 million in unsponsored care.
- The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences has a 18-year relationship with HISD's Brookline Elementary School.
- The School of Health Information Sciences conducted a research program jointly to research the problem and define a roadmap for implementation for the Greater Houston Community to be prepared for an emergency.
- The School of Nursing provided service in several affiliated clinics and select HISD schools.
- The School of Public Health has several outreach programs in Houston, Brownsville, Dallas, El Paso and San Antonio.
