Entering International Students

English Language Skills Workshop

Step 1. Workshop Pre-test. September 2, from 3:30-6:30 p.m. GSBS Conference Room (BSRB S3.8355) and Small Classroom (BSRB S3.8367) TENTATIVE - AWAITING CONFIRMATION

ALL international students entering GSBS who do not have a degree from an English speaking institution are required to take the Workshop Pre-test on Friday, September 2, from 3:30-6:30 p.m. in the GSBS Large classroom (BSRB S3.8371). The test is administered free of charge.
This test of English language skills determines how much instruction the student needs in order to bring his/her English language skills up to the desired level of proficiency.  If an entering student’s English skills are found to be inadequate for successful performance in the GSBS, the English Language Skills Workshop will be required.  Entering international students who demonstrate English proficiency on the pre-test will not be required to attend the Workshop. Individual results of the test will be held in total confi dence and will not be released to anyone except the student taking the test.

Step 2. English Language Skills Workshop TENTATIVE - AWAITING CONFIRMATION

When and Where. The workshop is offered each year only in the Fall term.  The next offering will be in the 2011 Fall term, beginning on September 13, and ending on December 1.  The workshop will meet in the GSBS Small Classroom (BSRB S3.8367, 3rd floor) from 5:15-7:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. Class instructors are from the University of Houston's Language and Culture Center (LCC).
Curriculum. The primary goals of this workshop are to improve oral communication skills and listening comprehension for non-native speakers.  Students participate in pronunciation practice, including stress and intonation, and in listening comprehension exercises.  Complementary work in reading, grammar, and vocabulary is included in order to round out the students' overall skills.
Costs and Payment. The cost per student for the workshop is $350; but the GSBS will pay $250 of that cost for GSBS degree students.  As in previous workshops, the remainder of the tuition cost may be paid by the participant, by a faculty member, or by a department.  The LCC will issue an invoice for the workshop to whoever the participant indicates on the LCC Workshop Registration Form, distributed during the first workshop session, as the payer.  If, however, the participant will be paying, the full cost of the Workshop must be paid prior to the first day of class.
Questions, Comments, Suggestions. If you have any questions about the Workshop please contact Dr. Tom Goka at (713-500-9868) or Thomas.J.Goka@uth.tmc.edu
