An interview in Houston is required for admission to this Program and will be arranged after the application is reviewed. The GSBS catalog is available on-line at the GSBS Web site. All application materials for the fall semester must be submitted by January 5 of that year (i.e., January 5, 2012, for Fall 2012 semester). International student applications are due by December 5 of the preceding year. Letters of admission will be mailed the beginning of May for the fall semester, in coordination with other genetic counseling programs. The four main criteria in consideration for admission to the Program are, in no particular order, volunteer and work related experience, the interview, cumulative undergraduate grade point average, and GRE scores. Please discuss relevant shadowing, volunteer, or advocacy work in your personal statement.

To submit an on-line application, please visit the Application for Admission. Make certain to read the instructions and note the special requirements for the genetic counseling program (the addition of three letters of recommendation and personal statement to the online application). For your information, the GRE code for UT Houston is 6907.

Tuition and Fees

Financial Aid

Four $1,000 competitive scholarships are offered annually based on academic achievement of the incoming class. These scholarships qualify students for in-state tuition rates regardless of their residency status, thereby reducing the annual cost for students from approximately $13,000 (out of state) to $3,500 (in state). Two Dean’s scholarships, one Willerson scholarship, and one Jacqueline T. Hecht scholarship constitute the four competitive scholarships awarded at the time of admission. Second year students are eligible to apply for the Barbara Kennedy scholarship, a need and academic-based scholarship. The scholarship award is $1,000 and qualifies the recipient for in state residency status if the student is not already classified as such.

Another path to in state tuition rates is the program’s participation in the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Academic Common Market (ACM). Students whose home state participates in the SREB ACM and do not have a genetic counseling program in their home state may apply to receive in state tuition at UT through the program. Participating states include: Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. Please visit http://www.sreb.org/programs/acm/acmindex.aspx for more information.

Financial aid is offered to students through the UT-H Office of Student Financial Aid. It is strongly recommended that applications for financial aid be submitted by March 1 of the year for which you are applying. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis, as determined by the date the application is complete. To ensure that funds are ready by the first day of class, applications must be completed no later than six weeks prior to the first day of class. Students may submit application materials for financial aid prior to receipt of offer of admission. Application materials may e obtained from the Office of Student Financial Aid, UT-Houston, P.O. Box 20036, Houston, Texas 77225.
