Degree Programs

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) offers M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. A joint M.D./Ph.D. Program, which has a separate application procedure, is offered in conjunction with The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

Students admitted to the Ph.D. program may select training in a designated area of study or elect an individualized, inter-disciplinary option. They are eligible to join any designated academic Program that offers Ph.D. training. Students in this program have the option of completing the M.S. or requesting a by-pass and proceeding directly to Ph.D. candidacy. The great majority of students request an M.S. by-pass, which is normally granted to those performing satisfactorily, but all decisions are made on an individual basis.

Students admitted to the M.S. program must complete that degree before they are eligible to apply for Ph.D. study. Students admitted to the M.S. program may pursue an independent, inter-interdisciplinary course of study supervised by an approved faculty committee. With permission of the Program Director, they may participate in the activities of an established academic Program, but interested students should check with specific Programs since not all offer this option.

Students admitted to the M.D./Ph.D. Program may perform the Ph.D. portion of their program in any area of study , or may select an individualized, interdisciplinary option.

All areas of study, including the individual inter-disciplinary option, offer a Ph.D. program, except for Genetic Counseling, which offers only the Specialized M.S. degree. Medical Physics offers two separate options, the Ph.D. and a Specialized M.S.
