The primary focus of research in my lab is to understand how the brain encodes, stores, and retrieves memories. A cross-modal approach is emphasized in which students will be expected to formulate and test hypotheses about the relationship between behavioral measures of memory function and data obtained from magnetic resonance imaging and intracranial electrophysiology. A specific ongoing project involves understanding the relationship between memory-related electrical activity in the hippocampal formation and the cortex by recording from large numbers of subdural electrodes implanted in patients being evaluated for surgical treatment of refractory epilepsy.
