GSBS student Krishnamurthy to receive JMNMF research awardMarch 07, 2013
The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston would like to congratulate Janani Krishnamurthy on winning a Research Scholarship Award, a $10,000 grant, from The Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation.
Krishnamurthy’s work involves targeting a unique viral envelope protein expressed exclusively on melanoma cells using immune cells such as T cells that are genetically engineered to recognize the viral protein.
"I would like to thank the Joanna M. Nicolay Foundation for giving me this opportunity and the award to continue my research in the field of melanoma,” said Krishnamurthy. “I would like to also thank GSBS, Dr. Cooper, my mentor, my collaborators and my wonderful lab members for supporting and inspiring me every day to conduct research.”
Krishnamurthy is the third student from GSBS to receive a grant from the foundation. Fellow award recipients include Maya Zigler, Ph.D. (2010) and John Kwon (2011). She is affiliated with the Immunology Program and her advisor is Laurence Cooper, M.D., Ph.D.
The Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation was established in Maryland in 2004 as a non-profit organization dedicated to melanoma.
