How Your Gifts Help UTHealth
The most recent 2010 census recorded 40 million people who are 65 years and older. By the year 2030, that number will climb to 72 million, and will represent about 20% of the entire population. The healthcare workforce with geriatric training is simply not sufficient to care for these numbers of older adults. Those of us who share a vision of excellent healthcare in an aging America, have to ask ourselves: “How will we take care of everyone?”
This is where the Consortium on Aging comes in. Established in 2010, it leverages the strengths and expertise found in each of UTHealth’s schools, including Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health, Biomedical Informatics, and Biomedical Sciences. The focus of clinicians, educators, and researchers is on the delivery of quality geriatric care; education of patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare providers and students; much-needed research related to aging; and community outreach.
The Consortium is regarded by University leaders as a model of inter-professional teamwork on our Houston campus, the kind of teamwork that is recognized as the future of health care delivery.
