Frequently Asked Questions

You have questions we can answer. Some frequently asked questions include:

What if I already have an electronic health record?
We can still help you! We will need to make sure your EHR is ONC-ATCB certified and that your practice is meeting the meaningful use objectives to qualify for the EHR incentives from Medicare or Medicaid.

What if I am already working with a vendor?
The GCREC staff is able to work with your practice even if you have already selected and/or implemented an EHR system. We will be able to provide services to you regardless of which EHR system you select. The GCREC is vendor neutral.

What if I don't have a fully implemented EHR?
No problem. The GCREC can review the processes and provide recommendations to support a full or optimized implementation. We can also be the provider's advocate to coordinate vendor provided services.

What if I need to upgrade my EHR?
If the practice has been using the current EHR for a number of years, an upgrade to an ONC-ATCB certified version is likely needed to meet Medicare or Medicaid incentive requirements. The GCREC can provide the project management resource to support the upgrade.

How much will it cost to join the GCREC?
The annual membership fee is waived for PCPs. Our services help providers transform their practices and to enhance their use of EHRs and achieve meaningful use. This includes individualized assessments, planning and project management support, workflow analysis and redesign if needed.

Am I able to receive REC services even if my practice does not meet all of the requirements?
Yes. The grant supports primary care providers but others are eligible for services under a separate fee structure.

Am I eligible if I am associated with a hospital?
In some cases, providers associated with public or critical access hospitals are also eligible for services, please contact us.

Is GCREC part of the Medicare or Medicaid incentive program?
The GCREC grant is funded by the Office of National Coordinator; it is a separate but complementary program that provides consulting assistance to eligible providers and hospitals. The initiative offers the provider a resource to help navigate the implementation process and meaningful use guidelines.

Does my practice have to purchase an EHR to receive incentives?
Yes. In order to receive incentive payments from Medicare or Medicaid, you will need to implement an ONC-ATCB certified EHR system.

How do I determine if my practice is eligible for EHR incentives from Medicare or Medicaid?
The qualifications for the two programs are different. Providers seeking Medicaid incentives must meet volume thresholds. Medicare reimbursements are based on a percentage of Medicare billing.

If my practice is eligible, can the GCREC assist me with obtaining EHR incentives?
Yes. We can help determine if you're eligible for incentives and can also assist with registration and attestation.

If my practice is not located in Southern Texas, am I still able to participate?
