Elected Leaders visit UTHealth

State Representative Dan Branch, left , and Dr. Richard Smalling, right, during his March 31, 2010 visit to the UTHealth Medical School. Representative Branch received an overview of the institution from Dr. Larry Kaiser, President and toured the Medical School and Memorial Hermann-TMC Hospital visiting the Emergency Department, Trauma Center, and Pediatric Surgery. In addition he gave a lecture to medical school students on the “Business of Medicine.” Representative Branch is the Chairman of the House Higher Education Committee.
Dr. Drue Ware, left, gives a demonstration to Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst during his September 7, 2010 visit to UTHealth. Lt. Governor Dewhurst received an update on the institution and discussed legislative priorities with Dr. Larry Kaiser, President, and other executive leadership. In addition he toured the Medical School and Memorial Hermann-TMC Hospital visiting the Stroke, Trauma, and Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) units. Following the tour of the Medical School, Lt. Governor Dewhurst spoke at the 2010 Salutation hosted by the Student InterCouncil.

In addition to the lunch with the UTHealth Development Board and executive leadership, Speaker Straus visited with Dr. Larry Kaiser, President to receive an update on the institution and later toured the UTHealth Medical School and Memorial Hermann-TMC Hospital visiting the Emergency Department, Trauma Center, and Pediatric Surgery.

As part of the visit to LBJ General Hospital, the county representatives received a briefing and tour of the hospital led by Dr. Steve Brown, Chief of Staff and Associate Dean for Harris County Programs. They were later able to participate in one-on-one shadowing of various departments in the hospital. The visit concluded with executive briefings from UTHealth leadership and the Harris County Hospital District.

In addition to the briefing and tour of the School of Public Health, Representative visited the Medical School. Following the visit to the UTHealth campus, Representative Eissler met with UTHealth Development Board members and UTHealth executive leadership. Representative Eissler is the Chairman of the House Public Education Committee.

Representative Hochberg visited UTHealth on April 16, 2010 where he saw the programs of the Children’s Learning Institute, led by Dr. Susan Landry, in action at the A+ Preparatory School. In addition he toured the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine then met with UTHealth Development Board members and UTHealth executive leadership. Representative Hochberg is the Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Education which has oversight of the UTHealth budget.
