Honors

University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Development Board Chair Gene Vaughan was the February 2009 recipient of the KPRC Jefferson Award for his activism in promoting civic leadership and early childhood education.

The University of Texas at Houston Police Department was awarded "Recognized Law Enforcement Agency" status from the Texas Police Chiefs Association's Law Enforcement Recognition Program, becoming only the 10th agency in the state to be so recognized.

Rodney Appell, M.D., director of the Texas Continence Center at the Vanguard Urologic Institute in Houston and clinical professor in the Department of Urology at the UT Health Science Center at Houston, has been elected to the board of directors of the National Association for Continence. The board provides oversight for the direction and operations of the non-profit consumer education and advocacy organization headquartered in Charleston, N.C.

The American Society for Microbiology selected Millicent Goldschmidt, Ph.D., to receive the 2009 Roche Diagnostics Alice C. Evans Award. Goldschmidt has a joint appointment in the Department of Periodontics at the UT Dental Branch and in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the UT Medical School. The Roche Diagnostics Alice C. Evans Award recognizes contributions toward the full participation and advancement of women in microbiology.

Presentations

Robert Emery, Dr.P.H., was among a selected group of invited university and governmental agency participants in a strategic roundtable discussion on radiological emergency response at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA. The session, held Feb. 10-11, focused on organizing radiation safety professionals in the event of a wide scale radiological emergency. Emery serves as the vice president for safety, health, environment and risk management for the health science center and associate professor of occupational health at SPH.

Pedro Ruiz, M.D., professor and interim chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, delivered the Harold W. Jordan's Grand Rounds lecture in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., Jan. 13, on the topic of Ethnicity and Psychopharmacology.

Thomas Clanton, M.D., professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, UT Medical School at Houston, presented "Management of Complex Foot and Ankle Injuries in the Athlete," at the Third Annual Mid-Winter Sports Medicine Seminar, held Feb. 15 in Houston.

Ananth Annapragada, Ph.D., associate professor at The University of Texas School of Health Information Sciences at Houston was an invited speaker at the sixth annual conference of The Academy of Medicine, Engineering, and Science of Texas. The invitation came from U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson and Academy President J. Tinsley Oden. The annual conference, held Jan. 8-9, brings together some of Texas' top researchers, university presidents, and corporate leaders to promote collaboration and discuss recent advancements in the three fields.

Arthur H. Jeske, D.M.D., Ph.D., professor, Department of Restorative Dentistry and associate dean for Strategic Planning, University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, recently presented "Contemporary Issues in Dental Pharmacology," to the Irish Endodontic Society in Dublin, Ireland, at their Annual General Meeting, Jan. 26.

Publications

Luis Ostrosky, M.D., associate professor of medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, UT Medical School at Houston, co-authored the recently released Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Candidiasis by the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Nancy Busen, Ph.D., A.P.R.N., F.N.P., associate professor at UT Health Science Center at Houston School of Nursing, recently published "Facilitating Risk Reduction Among Homeless and Street-Involved Youth," in the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
