Mackey Elected President of National Nursing Foundation Board
Thomas Mackey, Ph.D.
Thomas Mackey, Ph.D., associate dean for practice and professor of clinical nursing at The University of Texas School of Nursing at Houston, has been elected president of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Foundation Board of Directors. For the past two years he has served as treasurer of the AANP Foundation.
Mackey, who is a certified nurse practitioner, also is the founder of UT Health Services, which opened in 1991 and provides primary care, occupational health and employee health services to the university and other organizations in the Houston community. He is director of the university's Occupational Health for Nurses Program in the School of Public Health and a fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing and the AANP.
"This prestigious honor from your fellow nurse practitioners reflects the high esteem in which you are held," said James T. Willerson, M.D., president of the UT Health Science Center at Houston. "No doubt your dedication and leadership that we see every day were very evident to those voting. I am certain that with your energy and vision the AANP Foundation will flourish and set new standards for like organizations."
School of Nursing Dean Patricia L. Starck, D.S.N., said of Mackey's election that "being highly regarded by one's peers is the highest compliment a professional can receive."
The mission of the foundation is to advance the role of nurse practitioners through the support of education, research and practice for the improvement of the public's health. From 1998 through December 2006, the AANP Foundation awarded $355,650 worth of scholarships and grants exclusively to members of the AANP.
His goal for the coming year, Mackey said, is "to significantly increase the number and amount of scholarships and grants provided to AANP members. Collaboration with donors, industry and other health care organizations will be the key to our success."
