Dental Alumnus Creates Memorial Scholarship
Erbert William “Danny” D’Anton, D.D.S
The Dr. Danny D’Anton Scholarship Endowment has been established at The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, thanks to a $10,000 gift from Dental Branch alumnus James R. Ballinger, D.D.S., class of 1954.
The endowment will make scholarship funds available for student use in years to come. Erbert William “Danny” D’Anton, D.D.S., 86, professor emeritus at the Dental Branch, who died in his San Marcos home in early January, will be remembered by Ballinger and many more as an extraordinary friend, mentor and teacher.
His students were one of his greatest loves, and the following quotation was found in D’Anton’s papers: “A teacher affects eternity: He never can tell where his influence stops.” – Henry Adams.
The UT Dental Branch Alumni Association also contributed $10,000 to the fund during the association’s recent 50th anniversary celebration. In addition, the Mu Mu Chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society made a $1,000 contribution during its annual banquet.
Dozens of other contributions have been added to this fund as a sign of the impact of D’Anton’s more than 40 years of service to the Dental Branch. The first scholarship will be awarded to a third- or fourth-year doctoral student in September.
“We value all the alumni of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and we are grateful for their continued interest and support of our schools,” said James T. Willerson, M.D. “Gifts such as these are especially valuable as they provide support for the next generation of health professionals.”
