Red Duke, a Texas Lone Star
James "Red" Duke, M.D., is among 20 Texas Lone Stars showcased in an exhibit at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station. Duke is professor of surgery at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and the John B. Holmes Professor in the Clinical Sciences. The exhibit, which opened in September and will run through March 18, showcases Texans who have made significant impacts in their chosen fields. Among those featured with Duke are Lance Armstrong, Clint Black, Barbara Bush, Lyle Lovett, Drayton McLane and Sissy Spacek.
The museum is open Monday through Saturday 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday noon-5 p.m.
Innovation in Education
John Valenza, D.D.S., executive associate dean at The University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, brought electronic patient records and simulation in dentistry to the forefront Oct. 5 and 6, when he won third place in the 2006 Innovation in Health Science Education Awards.
The awards were presented by the UT Academy of Health Science Education at its third annual conference in Austin. The academy also awarded six small grants to faculty for new projects. Three of those grants went to faculty members at the UT Medical School at Houston:
- Chitra Chandrasekhar, M.D., assistant professor of radiology, Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging, Computer Assisted Radiology Education (CARE): Curriculum Development for Medical Students.
- Allison R. Ownby, Ph.D., assistant director, Office of Educational Programs, and assistant professor of pediatrics, Using Standardized Patients and Individual Learning Plans to Refine Residents' Professional Behavior and Communication Skills.
- David Robinson, M.D., associate professor of emergency medicine, and collaborator Joanne Oakes, M.D., assistant professor of emergency medicine, Women's Early Comprehensive Cardiac Assessment and Risk Education (WECARE) Program.
L. Maximilian Buja, M.D., executive vice president for academic affairs, presided at the meeting as 2005-06 president of the academy.
