Eduardo J. Sanchez, M.D., new director of the Institute for Health Policy at The University of Texas School of Public Health, gets acquainted with Lu Ann Aday, Ph.D., the Lorne D. Bain Distinguished Professor in Public Health and Medicine, during an Oct. 23 welcome reception. Formerly the Commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, Sanchez now is professor in the Division of Management, Policy and Community Health. The mission of the Institute for Health Policy is to assist researchers throughout the UT Health Science Center at Houston in translating their research findings into applied strategies for program administrators and evidence-based recommendations for health policymakers.
An alumnus of the School of Public Health and a board-certified family practice physician, Sanchez received the Presidential Award of Merit from the Texas Academy of Family Physicians in July and the Presidential Meritorious Service Award from the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) in September. He shared the ASTHO award with colleagues from Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi in recognition of leadership during the Hurricane Katrina and Rita response efforts last year.
