Letter from Dr. Willerson
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston has a longtime involvement with the American Heart Association. That has been strengthened with the recent appointment of our own Dr. David McPherson, Chairman of the Cardiology Division, Internal Medicine Department at UT Medical School, as president of the Houston Chapter of the American Heart Association.
Dr. McPherson, who is serving as chairman of our 2007 Team UT Heart Walk campaign, and I invite you to join our team for the Heart Walk, Saturday, November 3 in downtown Houston. Our partners and good friends at Memorial Hermann Healthcare System are a lead sponsor of this year’s Houston Heart Walk.
I have agreed to serve as our Executive Champion of this year’s walk because I know all too well that heart disease is the leading cause of death in Americans.
Our university has made a commitment for increasing our participation in this year’s walk. Our goal is to have at least 300 participants on our team and collectively raise $25,000 for the American Heart Association. Anyone, whether they work here or not, can be on Team UT, so please invite your friends and family to join us.
The Heart Association is making this a fun, family- and even pet-friendly event. There will be lots of events for kids that morning, like rock climbing, face painting, a moonwalk and even a petting zoo. Plus, there’ll be health screenings offered for all walkers.
Please speak to a member of your leadership team if you would like to be a Team UT team captain. Team captain orientation meetings will begin in early October. Captains need to attend only one of the four scheduled sessions, which will be held at different UT Houston locations for your convenience. For more information about participating, contact Rose Mary Betancourt-Trevino, 713-500-3209, or Rose.M.Betancourt-Trevino@uth.tmc.edu.
Together we can make a difference in the fight against heart disease.
Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you on November 3!
