Why Support the Heart Walk?
For every newborn who clings to life in spite of a heart defect.
For every parent, grandparent, daughter or son taken too soon by heart disease and stroke.
The American Heart Association works every minute of every day to advance groundbreaking medical research spread lifesaving knowledge and reach out to people of all ages. We're creating healthier communities, safe from the devastation of heart disease and stroke, to ensure stronger, longer lives for you and your loved ones.
- Heart disease is the #1 killer of women and men in the United States. Stroke is the #3 killer and a leading cause of permanent disability. These, and other cardiovascular diseases, claim more than 930,000 lives a year in our country.
- The economic toll of these diseases is staggering. In 2004, costs in our country are estimated to be $368.4 billion for treatment, rehabilitation and lost productivity.
- The Heart Walk stresses the importance of physical activity and other aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Healthy employees are more productive employees.
- The money raised will be well spent. Since 1924, the American Heart Association has helped protect people of all ages and ethnicities from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. The association invested more than $348 million in fiscal year 2002-03 for research, professional and public education, and advocacy.
- Most importantly, UT HSC receives grants, over $24 million in the last 10 years, from the American Heart Association to research heart disease and stroke. Our researchers and scientists work every day to help find heart disease and stroke.
