We Did It!

Committed walkers head away from beautiful downtown at
the start of their 5-mile trek.
Team UT was 300+ strong at the Nov. 3 American Heart Association Heart Walk in Houston. The UT Health Science Center exceeded its goal for number of walkers as well as funds raised. With contributions still coming in, more than $25,000 collectively was raised by the walkers.
Sylvia Brown, UT School of Nursing, and her team of 140 walkers, raised $6,206, making them the top fundraising team within Team UT. For her efforts Sylvia wins the Houston Texans football tickets, given by Dr. and Mrs. James T. Willerson.
Those who won Neiman-Marcus gifts cards contributed by David McPherson, M.D., chairman of the Medical School Cardiology Division, Office of Internal Medicine, included his clinic nurse Sheryl Murphy, who was top individual fundraiser with $2,150.
Dr. McPherson, who was captain of the Team UT Heart Walk effort, also awarded gift cards to Mamie Ellis, Dental Branch ($2,150); Stephanie Carter, Medical School ($1,359); and Jodi Jennings, School of Nursing ($1,150). Dr. McPherson made 10 Starbucks cards available to the next level of fundraisers, who were Shirley Edwards, Adelyn Russo, Jeremiah Walker, Patti Hendrix, Diana Browning, Samantha Eustis, Frank Velasquez, Mary Vooletich, Nancy Hudgins and Maria Saenz.
SON’s Brown has learned from the American Heart Association that the School of Nursing team, Horns for Hearts, was No. 15 in the city. “We worked very hard to build our team and collect donations,” Sylvia said in expressing her excitement at hearing the news.
See you next year!
