Job Well Done

What an incredible job members of the UT Health Science Center at Houston community have performed in providing health care and other volunteer services for evacuees from Hurricane Katrina!

The health science center’s role at the George R. Brown Convention Center ends as of 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19.

Since the George R. Brown medical clinic opened Sept. 2, more than 10,000 patient visits have been logged. More than 6,000 volunteers have assisted.

“We are extremely grateful for all of the UT Health Science Center family and our friends who have volunteered, stepping up to the challenges put in front of them,” said Michael McKinney, M.D., senior executive vice president and chief operating officer of the health science center.

Since Friday, the medical clinic has been operated by the U.S. Public Health Service, with volunteer physicians and nurses from Scripps Health in California and elsewhere.
